Ruth Phillips is the owner of Purple Hat Property Services and has been managing property on behalf of landlords for a number of years. After what felt like a life-time (thirteen years) as managing director of her family’s private hire and courier business in London, she enrolled at University of Westminster for a five year, part-time honours degree in Building Surveying. During the second year of the course the family business was sold and rather than continue in the same business decided it was time to prepare for her future in property.
With no experience of the industry and less than half way through the degree course she was offered a job as a property manager for a firm of chartered surveyors in Kentish Town and very quickly learned the ropes and became a senior property manager managing over 50 blocks/1500 units. She was given the opportunity to join the surveying team on certain projects to gain further experience and learn the ropes but with one day at university and only four working days in which to deal with the management duties and regular site visits it didn’t leave much time to spend on the surveying side.
After eighteen months, she was offered a position in a smaller surveying practice in West London. The company was much smaller with a friendly team and more prestigious properties. Here she worked closely with the senior partner and surveyor and worked on specifications for major works, party wall issues and general surveying in addition to learning more about residential property management and lettings.
A year later she was approached by an independent letting agent back in North West London to head up their property management department and bring some organisation to the chaos a worthy challenge.
Having graduated university with a first class honours degree in building surveying, working full time for a letting agent did give the required hours or sponsorship to become chartered but did give a lot of pleasure building a small management portfolio of 40 properties up to one in excess of 150.
Since the latter part of 2010 Ruth has been letting and managing property on a freelance basis, mainly in London but covering other areas of the South East too – with properties in Croydon, Chichester and Luton. In the summer of 2011 Ruth decided to become a landlord herself, rented out her London house and moved to Norwich, Norfolk bringing her expertise and personal service to a wider clientele.
In her spare time, Ruth enjoys walking with her two dogs, spending time with family and friends, live music acts and art. By her own admission Ruth is a girl geek, loves gadgets and technology and with a deep passion for music thinks that the iPod was the best invention ever, closely followed by the iPhone and Nespresso machine.
